How to Remove GA4 Data Thresholds So Clariti Can Collect Your Data

Switch your GA4 reporting identity to device-based so Clariti can collect complete page-level data.

Written by Jen Lowery

When you connect Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to Clariti, Clariti checks whether Google is holding back some of your data because of "data thresholds." If it is, you will see this message on the Google Account card in Settings:

The selected property is subject to GA4 "Data Thresholds", which significantly reduces the amount of data we can collect.

Clariti will not save your Google settings until thresholds are removed, because the data would be incomplete. The good news is that the fix takes about a minute in Google Analytics.

What Are Data Thresholds?

Google applies thresholds to protect visitor privacy. When your GA4 reports use Google signals (data from visitors who are signed in to Google) and a report has a small number of users, Google withholds some rows so no one can figure out who an individual visitor is. You can read more in Google's article About data thresholds.

Why Thresholds Matter for Clariti

Clariti collects page views, sessions, and users for every individual post. Many posts, especially newer ones or older ones with modest traffic, have small daily numbers, which is exactly what thresholds hide. With thresholds on, those posts could show missing or lower numbers in Clariti, and your decisions about what to update would be based on an incomplete picture.

How to Switch Your Reporting Identity to Device-Based

Changing your GA4 reporting identity to Device-based removes Google signals from your reports, which removes the thresholds. Google moves its menus around from time to time, so if something looks different, search for "Reporting identity" in the search bar at the top of Google Analytics.

1. Open Google Analytics and select the property you connect to Clariti.

2. Click Admin (the gear icon at the bottom left).

3. In the property settings, open Data display and click Reporting identity.

4. If you only see some of the options, click Show all.

5. Select Device-based and click Save.

Changing your reporting identity does not change or delete the data GA4 collects. It only changes how reports are put together, and you can switch back at any time. To learn what each option means, see How Does Changing My GA4 Reporting Identity Affect My Data?.

Finish Connecting in Clariti

1. In Clariti, go to Settings and find the Google Account card.

2. If the card shows Selection Needed, your settings form is already open. If it shows Connected, open the ... menu and choose Modify Settings.

3. Make sure the GA4 Property is the one you just changed, then click Save Google Settings.

Clariti tests the property again while it saves (the button reads Testing Google Settings...). If the thresholds warning is gone, you are all set, and your data will be collected within 24 hours.

Still seeing the warning? Double-check that you changed the same property that is selected in Clariti. If you have more than one GA4 property, it is easy to update the wrong one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to turn off Google signals completely?

What Clariti needs is a reporting identity of Device-based, which keeps Google signals out of your reports. You do not need to change anything else unless you want to.

Will this affect the reports my ad management company uses?

Some ad management companies have their own GA4 recommendations. See the section on ad management reports in How Does Changing My GA4 Reporting Identity Affect My Data?, and email us if their guidance conflicts with ours.

I am already connected. Do I need to do anything?

Clariti checks for thresholds when you save your Google settings. If you connected without seeing the warning, you do not need to change anything.
